Sewing courses
A lot of community centers and sewing machine manufacturers
offer sewing courses. Nowadays online sewing courses are also gaining
popularity.
The three main kinds of sewing courses offered
are dressmaking, embroidery and home furnishing. All of them begin
at the very basics.
Even someone who has never used a sewing machine
before will soon be confident to complete the task on hand.
Courses
run over several weeks and undertake one article to sew at a time. Dressmaking
courses begin by teaching the student the basic techniques that are
needed to make a simple top and a straight skirt. |
|
The student creates a sampler to be used as a reference
while learning to use a sewing machine. The first article to be stitched
is usually a calico skirt. Students are also taught how to alter a commercial
pattern for a perfect fit.
They learn to follow instructions
found in commercial patterns.
The basic skills learnt in this course
are used to sew the student’s own garment, usually a skirt.
Pattern and fabric selection are also discussed throughout the
course.
A sewing machine can be used for various kinds of
embroidery by use of certain attachments or software. At the end
of this course the student is adept at using all these.
The home furnishing sewing course teaches the techniques
for sewing soft furnishings for the home such as napkins, table runners,
table cloths and pillowcases. |
|
Different kinds of edging including fringed, hemstitched,
double fold miter and satin stitch for napkins and tablecloths are taught.
The online sewing courses often supply their kit and are conducted at specific predetermined times. The students log on to the message board or chat room of the class and follow the instructions of the teacher. It enables them to share their problems and questions with other students too.
